The Family
The Alfieri, Lords of San Martino, wove their name inextricably through the history of Italy's Piedmont region. Illustrious ancestors lived in this castle, enjoyed its beauty, and drank the wine from its vineyards. Among the more famous Lords were the architect Benedetto, the poet Vittorio, and the President of the Italian Senate, Cesare Alfieri.

The Marchese Carlo, the last male of the Alfieri line to possess the castle, was also known for his part in drafting the Albertine Statutes of 1848 that resulted in a liberal transformation of the Italian monarchy. Carlo married Giuseppina Cavour, beloved niece of Italy's great statesman Count Camillo Benso di Cavour. Two daughters were born from this marriage, Luisa and Adele. On the death of Adele in 1937, the estate and title passed to her nephew, Marquis Visconti Venosta, and then to Marquis Casimiro San Martino di San Germano in 1982.

Today, the Marquis Casimiro's three daughters Emanuela, Antonella, and Giovanna have renewed the historic wine cellars with modern technology while maintaining the traditions of wine-making at San Martino Alfieri.
